PROFILE
My real name is Marian Cates. I'm an artist, designer, photographer, and writer.
WRITING
I've published journalism, fiction and poetry. My plays and musicals have been produced by professional, academic and community theater companies.

ART & DESIGN
I love creating art, because it takes me into that eternal space in which the stresses of time drop away. Ah, to dwell always in that space!
My mother was a well-known artist in Richmond, VA. She taught me drawing when I was a girl and always encouraged me in my art. That has meant more to me than words can ever say.
My visual arts are painting, graphic design and photography.

MUSIC & THEATER
I've worked in all areas of the theater. I was Artistic Director of Kalahansa Theater Company in Asheville, N.C., and Green Alley Theater Company in Richmond, VA. My musical "Blake Street" was produced by Source Theater Company in Washington, D.C., as part of their "Festival of Firsts."
My musical for young people "The Crystal Apple" will be available to theater companies in 2012.
